Ask the Weatherguy
Question:
Hey Joel: I'm often in the position of deciding whether to do a bike commute home in the afternoon with t-storms threatening. Is there any online source or realtime or near-realtime lightning strike info? Answer:
Great question, and you're not the only one with this problem! There are sites to show lightning strikes, but the best thing is to get a good radar app on your cell phone and get good at interpreting that. Areas of yellow/orange/red on radar are usually associated with lightning. That's the best I can do. On the iPhone, I like Radarscope. A bit pricey but very good!
